Ethical Marketing
As in any sort of online marketing venture, there are rules and guidelines to abide by and you must be aware of the risks, particularly when you’re mass promoting. One of the biggest downsides of targeted email marketing is spam mail.
It is extremely important that you don’t include anybody on your mailing list (even pals, family, co-workers and so on.) without his or her authorization. Make people work to sign up for your newsletter by requiring them to email a certain address with a “subscribe” instruction, or by providing a newsletter sign-up box on your internet site for them to add their address to your list. Records are also extremely important; keep a backup with full contact information (telephone, fax, e-mail and snail-mail) for your ISP and web hosting company. Always keep a copy of all your outgoing email, particularly the newsletter itself.
Authorization Marketing is an approach to selling services and goods in which the receiver agrees in advance, or selects to receive your advertisements, newsletters, or other promoting information. Anyone with an email address suffers from information overload, automated telemarketing, and spam, that most people welcome the concept of authorization marketing. Online marketing front runner, Seth Godin states, “Permission promoting turns strangers into friends and friends into loyal customers. It’s not only about entertainment it’s about education.” So long as there’s the Internet, spamming will always exist. It’s economically viable to spammers because they have no operating costs outside the management of their mail lists, and it is tough to hold senders responsible for their mass mailshots. Because it is extremely unlikely to watch every uncalled-for e-mail sent to every email, spammers are common and the volume of uncalled-for mail has become very high.
But for people that send out unsolicited advertisements that truly get reported and caught, the penalty is just as high. If you’re labeled a spammer, many harmful consequences can happen to you, whether permanent or temporary. Worst-case eventuality, your ISP (Web service provider) will deny you access to your account pending an inquiry; your web hosting company may shut down your internet site; and eventually, you’ll be blacklisted.
Authorization Marketing isn’t just moral marketing, it also shows respect for your own business, industry and most of all, your valued purchaser.
